3 rules for better work-life balance | The Way We Work, a TED series
Have you answered a work email during an important family event? Or taken a call from your boss while on vacation? According to behavioral scientist and Harvard Business School professor Ashley Whillans, “always-on” work culture is not only ruining our personal well-being — but our work, as well. She shares which bad habits are stopping us from getting what we need out of our free time and three practical steps for setting boundaries that stick.

When I watched this movie, it was my teacher who said:" We have a class that says 3 rules for better work-life balance" for our next class. So I got this. For me, I think it seems too hard to make it true because if your country’s work culture is 996, it is one style of 9:00 am we go to the office, and 21:00 we go home, the worst is people have to work 6 days a week. Totaly 72 hours a week for these people you know.
Someone adapts to the situation, the people got the gain thing. People never know they have no money, and they just have time, what a bad life for him.
How do you think so?
I know work 4 days a week best thing I did as I was working about 11.30 hours a inculding travel
I really dislike how we have to centre our lives around work. This is so depressing
totally off topic but she looks so much like the singer Marianne Faithfull…
For every hour I work over 9 hours is an hour I don’t work during my normal work day. I just peel it off the next work day, and nobody has said a word about it.
Thanks for sharing this video… Interesting. I think, It depends on where we work, and how we manage the work. We can refuse assignments that are not too important to do, or those tasks can be done by someone else. Where are our priorities going? choose the best..

Great video
It’s probably just a coincidence, but have you ever noticed that the same people who champion "work/life balance" are also the same people who complain that "the system will never give [them] a house to own"……?
𝗛𝗼𝘄 𝗗𝗼 𝗬𝗼𝘂 𝗠𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗕𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲?
The still, vegetative and animate levels of nature are the only ones in a state of balance, because they have no free choice. They make no decisions as to whether they should behave one way or another, but they behave according to their inborn nature.
We people, however, act according to our decisions that are higher than our inborn nature. We thus use these levels of nature—still, vegetative and animate, which are below our human level—egoistically, bending them however we wish for personal benefit.
We thus destroy and empty the planet, plant life, animals, and eventually also people, due to the egoistic way we relate to each other and nature.
The system we live in was set up so that we reach a state of mutual consideration, encouragement and support. That is the key to entering into a state of balance with nature.
By acting contrarily, with calculations of self-benefit overriding those of benefiting each other and nature, we then knock ourselves out of balance with nature.
Then, we experience this imbalance as suffering on personal, social and economic scales, and also as ecological blows, whether it be earthquakes, floods, wildfires, pandemics and several other phenomena that we call “natural disasters.”
The more we head into the future without transforming our attitudes to each other and nature—from egoistic to altruistic—then the more we will experience our tightening interdependence negatively.
However, if we start relating in a considerate, supportive and encouraging way to each other, then we will see how nature also relates positively to us. Accordingly, we will unlock a new balanced, harmonious and peaceful existence.
To anyone at my job, I am truly sorry that I am inadvertently bringing this drama into a positive and functional workspace. I don’t know why all of this is a secret from me, but I will 100% not be pressuring anybody to talk to me about this at work, and I am very sorry if it felt like I may have been. I ABSOLUTELY do not mean to come in and be a disruptive force, I want to be a positive and helpful member of an already functional team. I promise you that any issue you have with this drama being a part of the workplace, I wish that it wasn’t much much more. I wish this wasn’t happening altogether. I will try to refrain from making comments on YT while I am on the job, even on my breaks. This is the best job I’ve ever had, and I am so incredibly grateful that Kim (and everybody else) was willing to help me get my job back after I had to check myself into Pinerest, and then needed some time to get back on my feet. I know I said that I am “not feeling well,” when I called in this morning, I don’t know why I didn’t just say that I was having a suicidal episode and that I needed a mental health day. It just felt like drama and unnecessary, but I apologize for not being fully honest. I am sorry to everyone who works there for bringing this in to the workplace, I truly do not mean to upset any of you and I will try very hard to not upset you in the future.
This so simple, but brilliant. I’m implementing boundaries, blocking my calendar and increasing healthier habits. BTW, read the study on taking your phone to the bathroom. Yeah, you are shortening your life with that habit, worried about being prompt to emails and texts. BS! and you maybe causing digestive issues. OK, off to set boundaries. Thank you for this talk!
I am in India…life is chill… I tried the work life balance in another country. Got fired!!!
Implementing comprehensive wellness initiatives enhances employee well-being, fostering a positive workplace culture that correlates with heightened productivity and work quality. Strategic investments in wellness programs, coupled with the cultivation of a supportive atmosphere and emotional aid, contribute to the establishment of a resilient and sustainable work environment over the long term.
I had a boss that expected me to answer instantly to text messages at ALL hours. If I didn’t respond instantaneously they’d proceed to spam text and call me multiple times. One day I had awful cramps on a day off and was taking a nap for two hours. I woke up to ten texts and multiple calls. Needless to say I put my two weeks in the next day. I can’t think of anything that is that urgent in a non-emergency that can’t be left until work hours. I think in the hiring process we need to be interviewing the supervisor as well. Find out if they implement any of these rules in their own lives. If not, the job is not worth it imo.
Working Boss you coming home
Control yourself self at relaxing level then you have to see more creatively in yourself 💯
Hello there! Nice Channel
I do not want to sound like a bad/judgemental person, but I think she was pregnant in this video. What gave me that thought was that her tummy looked a bit round, but her arms and face looked slim.

I just can’t seem to set a balance between my life and work and i’m just losing my mind 1!

Thank you for this. Some helpful tools to use. When you’re passionate about your work you find it more hard to switch off. But now I realize the importance of resting and valuing time to reduce stress and a more balanced lifestyle.
Ashley Whillans is so inspiring. I think we all need to hear this message more often. Also, I’ve been using Astirna New Tab and it’s helped me stay organized while working from home.

Someone said it doesnt apply to manual labour but manual labour doesnt require you to have degree or utilize mind like white collar does
I’ve never heard ‘feel free to slack me’ before. I can guess the meaning but is that a new slang from the US?
I wholeheartedly agree with the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. Work-life balance is of paramount importance in today’s fast-paced world. Employers must recognize that it directly impacts their employees’ well-being and overall job satisfaction. Striking a balance between work and personal life is crucial for mental and physical health, productivity, and job retention. Employers should actively support their workforce in achieving this equilibrium by implementing flexible schedules, promoting remote work options, and encouraging time-off policies. When employees can maintain a healthy work-life balance, they are more motivated, engaged, and better equipped to contribute to their organizations’ success.
I’m working in a job that I always wanted, it’s a good package, the wage is OK and I’m in a house with all expenses paid. What’s not to like?
Well, yes, there are a lot of people worse off…. however, I feel for the total package my job provides I have basically become a slave to some degree.
I can’t plan ahead, and I have to always be on call… some weeks sleep is a rare thing and I’m on burn out!
I truly believe in hard work, but like anything in life, if it’s broken or needs recharging, then you have to take time to recharge or fix the issue…..
I do believe I will take a temporary pay cut and get out of this job before it slowly kills me.
And no job is worth your health. Your health is your wealth!
Hi NCLE!
🤣💣💣💣💣💣💣💣
Wonderful information on how we can be more productive in work and manage your time also how to deal with your time in order to be happy and rest if you take time off.I loved how she said not only reframe rest also reclaim it👍🏻
1.reframe rest.
2.set tram goal
I work in a job that is demanding seasonally. Recently we implemented a 4-day work week for our off-season to balance this out and it has made a world of difference for my motivation and level off burn-out. I also never have notifications on for work emails.
Helo, i’m Dwi Isneniah. Let me share my opinion about this tedtalk video youtube chanel. The tittle is 3 rules for better work-life balance. I think, this video is good because it’s true that we have to make boundaries when working and when we’re relaxing enjoying life, because otherwise both are not managed properly. then a good and orderly life between work and daily life will not go well. Thankyou❤
It was very interesting
Looks like nothing has changed and now we demand more out of individual employees because of inflation. We’re all more miserable now than ever.
I’m absorbed in this content. I had the privilege of reading something similar, and I was absorbed. "Dominating Your Clock: Strategies for Professional and Personal Success" by Anthony Rivers
Reframe rest 2. Negotiate 3. Set time goals

One thing that I hate to say to family members and friends is that I am always swamped under with work. Everyone should spend time with families and friends rather than indulge in work 24 hours.
How can this be a problem ; just turn off your phone on weekends.
I would bet our ancestors, just 2 or 3 generations ago, would laugh if they heard about work-life balance. Would they not feed their animals or not go to work to achieve ‘work-life’ balance. No, work is part of life, and for nearly all of human history, work was necessary for survival. And it still is for those working for themselves. Most people are soft now and would have a tough time surviving a generation or two ago.
